Although writing is solitary work, getting published – and doing it well – is a team effort. I’m thankful to the several people who read pre-publication drafts and offered insightful comments. I didn’t make all the changes (and I’m sure typos must still remain), but I can’t wait any longer to hold this message back.
The beating heart of this book is the biblical theology of the Holy Spirit. While I was a campus minister in Florida, a group of students asked me to teach them two particular things that they had questions about — baptism and the Holy Spirit. For the Holy Spirit, I ended up studying every verse of the Bible that mentions the Spirit and his activity. My impression at the time was that the Spirit was mostly a New Testament thing. I knew about the Spirit (or “wind of God”) hovering over the waters in Genesis 1, and I knew the prophecies that Jesus and the Apostles quote.
In my studies, I was completely surprised by how often the Spirit shows up in the Old Testament. I simply hadn’t noticed how much he was there until I went looking for him. Essentially, the Holy Spirit falls upon and fills important people in order to equip them to do something extraordinary. It happens to Othniel, Gideon, Jephthah, Samson, and Saul — suddenly transforming these men into powerful fighting machines. The Spirit inspires the prophets, teleports Ezekiel, places architectural plans in King David’s mind, and equips Moses’ craftsmen to construct the tabernacle and the priestly garments. And that’s not all!
Reading about how the Spirit gave Old Testament people supernatural courage and hyper-creativity allowed me to understand the New Testament gift of the Spirit in New Ways. The incredible message that Peter tells the converts at Pentecost is that the same Spirit that helped David kill Goliath and Isaiah predict the future would now be living in EVERYBODY who turned to Jesus. It’s radical and empowering and it’s changed my life.
